Briefing on CARE's maternal health work in Peru and around the world
On Wednesday June 16, CARE hosted a Congressional briefing with Representative Kay Granger (R-TX), Ranking Member of the Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, who recently returned from a CARE Learning Tour to Peru. Also on the panel were the White Ribbon Alliance and CARE’s Mothers Day Every Day Advisory Committee members Christy Turlington Burns, Anita McBride and Mark Dybul.
Anita McBride opened the conversation by highlighting the importance of the bipartisan work of the White Ribbon Alliance and CARE’s Mothers Day Every Day campaign. Half a million women die each year from largely preventable complications due to pregnancy and childbirth.
Rep. Granger spoke of the unique perspective she now has having seen challenges and triumphs on the ground firsthand, rather than simply looking at line items in budgets. She added that "these women [in Peru and other places around the world] aren't dying because the global health community doesn't know how to prevent their deaths; they are dying because the world has not stepped up and helped.”
